Akihabara News — China, the world’s leader in clean energy production, has surpassed the United States by a factor of more than three in terms of electricity generation from renewable sources.
According to the Global Electricity Review 2024 by Ember, China generated approximately 2,894 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity from renewables in 2023, while the United States managed around 842 TWh during the same period.
This stark disparity is particularly notable in the sectors of solar and wind power, where China’s dominance is even more pronounced. Ember’s data shows that China generated 1,668 TWh from solar and wind energy, which is four times the 429 TWh produced by these sources in the United States.
China’s lead in renewable energy isn’t just in generation but also in installed capacity. With over 1,000 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by the end of 2023, China’s numbers are well ahead of the United States, which has been planning to add around 337 GW of new renewable capacity in the coming years, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
Even this amount may be reduced by the impact of the incoming Trump administration, which is far more skeptical about the need for renewable energy.
China’s aggressive push towards renewable energy is supported by robust policy frameworks, significant advancements in manufacturing, particularly in solar panels and wind turbines, where it holds over 80% of global manufacturing capacity. This has allowed China not only to power its vast population with cleaner energy but also to become a major exporter of renewable technologies.
The implications of China’s renewable energy production tripling that of the United States are profound for global energy markets and climate goals. It positions China as a central player in the fight against climate change, although challenges remain in ensuring that this clean energy expansion translates into a corresponding reduction in fossil fuel use.
This development comes at a time when the world is looking for leadership in sustainable energy solutions, highlighting both the opportunities and responsibilities of being the world’s renewable energy titan.
