AkihabaraNews.com Editor & Content Curator
Reno is a generalist researcher and commentator on robotics, cybernetics, non-biological intelligence, transhumanism, and the social & economic dynamics of large-scale technology investment. And other stuff he finds important or just, you know, cool.

Influences include ethnographic sociology, academic reporting, Freakonomics, Carl Sagan, Kurzweilian logic, stand-up comedy, being just old enough to remember life before the internet, and childhood access to his grandmother’s extensive collection of sci-fi literature.

Reno spends the bulk of his free time composing intentionally run-on sentences, supporting the pro-semicolon lobby, and just kind of making up punctuation.

A bit of a surprise, we felt; not a whole lotta design risks being taken at this year's show. The dominant themes were connectivity amongst a range of eco/green vehicles, and correspondingly, most of the cars seemed a version of a semi-morphed, slightly squeezed or widened Prius; or too close to a racecar to be practical; or very small with questionable utility.

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week, given that Japan’s backing off their CO2 emissions pledges, it’s no surprise that Sumitomo wants to frack with an American gas company, and, continuing the nation’s ongoing energytech exportation efforts, Japan wants to sell its high-tech thermal turbine thingys to Turkmenistan.

iREX Robot Wrap-Up - AkihabaraNews.com
Japan’s premier robot expo is over, and all that remains of iREX 2013 are the things we learned, contacts we made, and the videos, photos, and desperate attempts to effectively communicate the breadth of what exactly went down. Something beyond “Wow, it was like… so many awesome robots.” Not so easy, that.
