AkihabaraNews.com Editor & Content Curator
Reno is a generalist researcher and commentator on robotics, cybernetics, non-biological intelligence, transhumanism, and the social & economic dynamics of large-scale technology investment. And other stuff he finds important or just, you know, cool.

Influences include ethnographic sociology, academic reporting, Freakonomics, Carl Sagan, Kurzweilian logic, stand-up comedy, being just old enough to remember life before the internet, and childhood access to his grandmother’s extensive collection of sci-fi literature.

Reno spends the bulk of his free time composing intentionally run-on sentences, supporting the pro-semicolon lobby, and just kind of making up punctuation.

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week it's a new force-reactive, wireless, two way touching that's so fast it seems instantaneous, and Kirobo, the cute little space robot that only speaks Japanese, finally came out of ISS storage to talk with astronaut Koichi Wakata.

Christmas Lights & Illumination in Tokyo - AkihabaraNews.com
Forgive, if you will, the on-the-way-home, low-q, but high-res video. This illumination as animation display is one of Tokyo's most original and entertaining, and we had to share.

This week it’s a slimmed down version of the Sony’s Xperia Z1 perhaps being processed through the FCC, and Japan’s going to push formal English education into the last two years of elementary school, which is far sillier than it sounds. Oh, and technical difficulties week #2 make JTFF once again JTFS (sorry!).

IE-KMD Venture Day Tokyo - AkihabaraNews.com
Japanese VC & startup culture is itself a very long-tailed startup; the product and revenue model are obvious, and in this case, the investment, marketing, and incubating were handled by the IE Business School, the Keio University Graduate School of Media & Design, and J-Seed Ventures. It went like this:

Move to southern Japan, become an English teacher, fire up the laptop and a USB mic, and then record & engineer your music in a shoebox apartment. That little slice of DIY life belongs to Branden Kirchmeyer, a son of Buffalo, New York. Here’s the tech, the music, and a bit of the story behind it all.

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week it’s super-thin condoms, why, nobody knows; Nissan’s buddy Renault claims extended-range EVs by 2020, why, because range is a problem; Pakistan wants Japan’s UltraSuperCritical clean coal tech, why, because tit for tat. Oh, and the JTFF became the JTFS, why, technical difficulties, yo!

PS4 Sales - AkihabaraNews.com

Sony’s Sold a Boatload of PS4s
There’s not a whole lot we can say about the PS4 hasn’t already been said - except this: Unsurprisingly to most, it’s actually a wildly successful Sony product with an effective, well-received, multinational launch befitting a global electronics firm that operates not just in Japan, but around the world in diverse markets with diverse consumer bases.

TMS 2013: Wonderful, Amazing, and Almost Entirely In-the-Box
A bit of a surprise, we felt; not a whole lotta design risks being taken at this year's show. The dominant themes were connectivity amongst a range of eco/green vehicles, and correspondingly, most of the cars seemed a version of a semi-morphed, slightly squeezed or widened Prius; or too close to a racecar to be practical; or very small with questionable utility.

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week, on one hand it’s Fujitsu bowing out of the London Stock Exchange, and on the other pun-intended hand, it’s Fujitsu releasing the first touchless palm-reading laptop - for authentication, not to predict your future, and the Japanese royalty are Let’s Enjoying in India to promote J-tech and warm feelings.

Kisai Rorschach - AkihabarNews.com

“Excuse me, could you psychoanalyze the time for me?”
Long, long before today's news of the ePaper-powered Kisai Rorschach, we were regularly visiting and mentally adding to cart from Tokyoflash’s* super-dense catalog of unique, you-can’t-get-these-anywhere-else wristwatches.
