Reno is a generalist researcher and commentator on robotics, cybernetics, non-biological intelligence, transhumanism, and the social & economic dynamics of large-scale technology investment. And other stuff he finds important or just, you know, cool.

Influences include ethnographic sociology, academic reporting, Freakonomics, Carl Sagan, Kurzweilian logic, stand-up comedy, being just old enough to remember life before the internet, and childhood access to his grandmother’s extensive collection of sci-fi literature.

Reno spends the bulk of his free time composing intentionally run-on sentences, supporting the pro-semicolon lobby, and just kind of making up punctuation.

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week an Indian company has found a way to get its energy saving tech into 20% of the computers manufactured here in Japan, and a Japanese firm has decided that, in addition to the allure of football and famous spicy chicken parts, Buffalo, NY is the place to set up a new shop for solar panel manufacturing!

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week it looks like India is going to add Japanese train tech to their cart even though the pirated Chinese knock-offs oooops we mean "models" are cheaper, and here at the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix has introduced a new company, Shinra Technologies, which they hope will kill all gaming hardware...kinda!

Just Saying
Yes, it matters that they're Korean!
...because, of course, AkihabaraNews.com is "Japan & Asia Tech • Cool and Cultural News." So, we saw this cool robot news, could hear in the accent that these researchers are actually from Korea, and boom: justification! (in fact, according to their MIT profiles, they both studied at Yonsei University in Seoul)

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week Japan’s apparently trying to sell some bigass submarines to an Australian navy keen on modernizing, a Japanese manufacturing conglomerate is opening a big new plant in Indiana, and Toyota has come out and publicly declared that the romance is over, and they’re not getting back together with Tesla.

Why Does Japan Get Dyson's New 360 Eye Robo-Vacuum First? - AkihabaraNews.com
The steadily plodding iterations of iRobot’s Roomba and its legion of copycats are old hat, and the collective We aren’t really impressed anymore. While the 360 Eye performs the same task, it stands out, and just kinda has that new robot smell. The talking points/broad strokes/things to know are:

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week Americans are a few steps closer to experiencing the kind of high-speed rail travel that Japan’s ALREADY HAD FOR LIKE 50 YEARS, and a Tsukuba-based company says they’ve made a considerable breakthrough in adding touchy-feely to the looky-looky of virtual and augmented reality systems.

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week we’ve just one little nugget to rollout: You might have heard that SoftBank is taking Sharp’s flagship smartphone to the U.S., but what you might not know is that Sharp might have the company of a much larger brother.

Tokyo: Largest City in the Known Universe (and Props to Alasdair Rae) - AkihabaraNews.com
Detailed are the nations of the world with populations exceeded by that of the Tokyo Metropolis, which, at current estimates, is around 37.2 million souls. The map starkly illustrates this reality on a global scale: Tokyo has more residents than 136 nations of the world - for the number likers, that’s about 70%.

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week we're talking about Japan's role in the iPhone 6's alleged and guessed at and in all ways speculated upon manufacturing delays due to display assembly issues, and then we talk about gambling, booze, and internet addiction and how that last one might be really kinda highly subjective and we're not buying all the Ministry of Health is selling!

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week the earth shook, babies cried, and the very logic of existence was thrown into doubt: an American anime is being exported to Japan, and since the Obon holiday equals a very slow tech week, the ultimately circular cultural force of animated images is all we’re talking about!

Thanko Spy Watch Shoots HD Video & Stills, Stores Data - AkihabaraNews.com
Why Would a Wristwatch Shoot HD Video? It’s a more than fair question, but asking why Thanko does what it does is practically anathema to their entire business model.

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week Honda donated over $1 million to earthquake recovery in China's Yunnan province and sadly we're the only URL on the planet saying anything about it, the U.S. Navy and Japanese DoD are building an unmanned fuel cell-powered submersible, and DMP released the world's smallest GPU!

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week we're completely unsurprised to learn that the Japanese are getting better at being the longest-lived population on earth, and Japan's working to further trade, tech, and other bilateral cooperation with Vietnam, which, contrary to what the hard of thinking might assume, is awesome!
