Canon EOS 40D! Hands-on!

Rate this Review:  BadPoorAverageGoodExcellent
One week with the Canon EOS 40D, there aren't many people who wouldn't like that! As we previously had the pleasure of reviewing the 1D Mark III, this "semi-pro" solution was pretty impressive, and features a lot of things seen on its "big brother". Replacing the 30D (that we still use on a regular basis for a lot of our articles), the 40D brings quite a bit of evolution to the table. A lot comes straight from the 1D Mark III, like a 3 inch screen, AutoFocus-On, Live-View, anti-dust system, and other subtleties...

In "the field", the 40D is as easy to use as the 30D. Thanks to the Digic III Image Processor, you can get good quality pictures in ISO 800 despite a little bit of noise. ISO 1600 is surprisingly good, especially since the 30D kind of forced you to keep it down to 800... ISO 3200 is possible for those who desire it; images look good when printed, and excellent on the internet when you reduce the dimensions. The Live-View function is very useful when taking "acrobatic shots," unless you enjoy crawling or putting yourself in ridiculous positions. However, as on the Mark III the lack of AutoFocus in this mode will require some patience from you to get THAT particular shot... so take your time! High-speed continuous mode is not as good as on the Mark III, but with 6.5 fps you should have more than enough. An important thing to know, in order to master the 40D you'll have to dig deep into the options; many are disabled by default.

Plus:
The style
Image quality in ISO 1600.
Live View.
Very quick Auto Focus.
Settings possibilities,
… and more.

Minus:
I don't want to give it back!
No AF in LiveView.
Buttons under the screen are too sensitive.

Conclusion:
The EOS 40D is the perfect solution for those who dreamed of a 1D Mark III but couldn't afford it. It can also be used as an excellent secondary solution for professional photographers. It's impressive to see all the things that Canon managed to put inside this new EOS. With a price tag of less than 800€ here in Japan, the price/quality ratio is simply unbeatable!

I've been playing with my 40D that I got for my upcoming Japan trip (first time, cant wait!) for about 2 weeks now and I can't praise it enough. Although I had to read the manual twice to work out half of the settings.

Now if only i was any good at photography heh

Picked mine up from Heathrow, on my way out to Tokyo last month, wanted a UK warranty, and cash back deal.
The autofocus in live-preview is in one of the options, and doesn\'t work in the creative modes. Enable the option, put it in \'P\' and hold the AF-on button for a few seconds. Locks on a dream.
I\'ve has 300D,10D and now the 40D, it\'s great.

About the "minus" of the camera, it does have AF when you are in Live View, but instead of using the shoot button, you got to press AF on the back of the camera.

When I look at the 40D, it really feels like my S3IS is outdated.

3200 ISO, native, without expansion? Ouch. My 5D feels the pain already. I’d be curious to see how the 40D stacks up to the 5D in low light, at 1600/3200 ISO.

the price has come down to less than one thousand at newegg for body alone (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683012022

Or get an XTI for about $600...hmm, 400 bucks difference. With the better build I'd choose the 40D.

Or get a really nice D300 with its clean high ISO or the E3 for its twistable LCD.

I love my 40D.. once you have learnt the menu's etc it is stunning to use. i do wish it was 12 mp and had a full sized sensor.. but then it would be double the price...
