About Japan Robot Week 2016

(Description provided by organizers; edited for content and clarity.
In 2015, the Japanese government announced “Japan’s Robot Strategy,” designating the subsequent five years as a term for dedicated focus on robotics innovation. Leading up to 2020, the government pledged to invest approximately 100 billion JPY (~$990,000,000 USD) in robotics-related projects, aiming to expand the service robot market to 1.4 trillion JPY (~$13.8 billion USD) - about 20 times today’s market value.

Japan Robot Week, held in biennial alternation with the International Robot Exhibition (iREX), focuses primarily on service robotics, including various related technologies and components.

In a broad effort to stimulate business negotiations, industry cooperation, and technology exchange, this year’s event features The 7th Robot Award ceremony and exhibition, joint exhibitions from universities and laboratories, and other fascinating programs related to service robots.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you at Japan Robot Week 2016.

We Will Totally Be There

Japanese robotics, particularly assistive (service) robotics, is a major area of interest and focus for AkihabaraNews. We'll shoot photos and video, talk with industry and media insiders, and produce a well-rounded body of content that fully explains and encapsulates the Japan Robot Week experience...which, to be honest, is just a professional way to say that we’ll be nerding out on robo-everything.

What Does a Japanese Robotics Expo Look Like?

Without any hyperbole, Japan Robot Week and its biennial counterpart, the International Robot Exhibition (iREX), are nothing short of amazing, inspiring, and in the truest sense of the word: awesome. While iREX is considerably larger than the upcoming Japan Robot Week, the feeling is comparable - trust us: robodorky dreams are made of these.

To get a feel for what’s in store, watch DIGITALHUB.JP’s iREX 2015 by iPHONE music video below, followed by video and a gallery from our coverage of the iREX 2013 International Robot Expo.

On Youtube, a video of this robot with excellent gymnastics ability has been creating a lot of buzz in Japan.

We found this amazing example of "technology meets art" from The Creators Project.

This video is called "Box" and this what they said about it:

Box explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera.

At JIMTOF 2014, Sugino Machine unveiled the “JCC503 Robo”, a CNC precision washer that positions parts with a numerically-controlled robotic arm and utilizes a high pressure washer to remove chips as small as 0.6 mm generated during machining processes.

This is a robot system for keyhole surgery, consisting of a master unit operated by the surgeon, and a slave unit that moves on the patient side. "Right now, we're working with surgeons, who are actually using this system and giving us feedback on how to improve it. We're receiving support from MEXT, and we aim to achieve a practical version within 4 to 5 years."
JAPANESE ROBOTS: iREX by iPHONE (VIDEO)
In December of 2015, hundreds of the world’s most advanced robots crowded the massive Tokyo Big Sight Convention Center for the biennial iREX International Robot Exhibition. You might be surprised how well an iPhone 6s Plus does with that.
Lost Transformers Gallery Found at Last! (20 Photos)
The life-size, more "realistic" models were kinda meh, but the pre-Transformers Diaclone and Microman toys, along with generational collections covering yearly character iterations, themes, and variants, in addition to some super-obscure Japan-only figures - that's where the magic was...and we finally found this lost gallery!
