Screw-on Strap & Lanyard Bracket for iPhone

Screw-on Strap/Lanyard Bracket for iPhone

The Wonderful World of Thanko

Regular readers know that our lust for (almost all) things Thanko runs deep. The Akiba-based company pumps out a steady stream of products slathered with a glaze of frivolous practicality that’s just so, so Japanese it hurts...hurts so good!

We’re jealous, really. Sitting around at Thanko headquarters just dreaming up ways to build spy watches and USB bento warmers and combination mobile chargers/hand warmers all day - and then actually creating and marketing the products - that’s living the dream right there. Among their dreams:

Today’s Thanko: Rigid Hook for iPhone Lanyard or Strap

From the simplest to the highest of high-end, the overwhelming majority of Japanese mobile gear comes with a tiny little indentation spanned by a rigid bar that serves as an anchor for a wrist or lanyard strap (also common on most point-and-shoot cameras). Even Sony’s beautifully designed flagship smartphones have it; it is effectively the standard, and it does offer some assurance.

Bulkier iPhone cases have long offered this functionality, the iPhone itself has not and probably never will. Since Japanese consumers like the feature, and the iPhone is the best-selling phone in Japan, with typical shrewdness Thanko created a tiny little accessory for users who don’t want to cover up their shiny new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus with a clumsy cover, but still want to get their lanyard on:

The hook attaches simply by removing the iPhone 6/6 Plus’ two original bottom screws, lining up the bracket, and tightening things up with the ever so slightly longer screws included in the kit. And just like that, safety and peace of mind.

The bracket does not interfere the Lightning plug, but obviously could get in the way if you use an iPhone charging dock.

Specs for the Thanko Rigid Hook Bracket Accessory:

  • Dimensions: Width 21mm × depth 4.5mm × height 3mm
  • Weight: 0.1g
  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Includes: Three screws (1 extra); bracket; tiny screwdriver
  • Fits: iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus
  • Price: ¥1,280 ($10.80)

Apple iPhone Huge Sales -
However we decide to categorize the devices, here in Japan, there is clearly one smartphone to rule them all. For more than 3 years now, with a consistently growing marketshare, iterations of Apple's flagship product have been the best selling phones in Japan - and not just among smartphones - that's for the entire mobile telecommmunications market.

Our personal telecommunications devices, our smartphones, have long been well beyond simple "phones." They're broadly applicable, technologically disruptive information and media vectors.

Unlike a traditional mobile phone or Android smartphone, iPhone doesn't support mobile wallet services. But, NTT docomo made it possible to join those services using your iPhone.

They are going to release Osaifu Keitai Jacket 01, a device for iPhone that transforms the iPhone into a mobile wallet compliant device.
