Some Beautiful Japanese Cosplay for the Weekend (PROBABLY NSFW GALLERY) [TOP 14 of '14]

Editor's Note:
The following article,
originally published on November 15, was AkihabaraNews' 13th most popular of 2014. Only took a month and a half to get that high on the charts. Guess we need more cosplay around here.

Cosplay

Almost all, at least 98.5% of our readers should know what this means. For the other 1.5, it breaks down like this: Cos = costume; play = play. It means playing dress-up like we did as kids, except cosplay happens way, way past puberty, is often public, and is social/communal. Cosplay doesn't have a really specific place of origin, but most would say it began sort of concurrently as an American/Japanese phenomenon, then went global.

Costumes vary widely, but generally speaking the largely homemade or custom-ordered gear spans the breadth of Japanese and American anime/animation (with the former being dominant), includes a healthy dose of video game heroes and villains, and lastly, is well-inhabited by comic book and manga characters (which of course overlap with the anime/animation). Basically, it's anytime-doable Halloween.

Beautiful Cosplay at Tokyo Otaku Mode

Our friends over at Tokyo Otaku Mode - the very same who've brought us sushi socksAttack on Titan Jenga and 2015 calendars, Japanese-designed Iron Man and Daft Punk figurines, and much more - have assembled a pretty fantastic gallery of some very accomplished (in many ways) cosplayers. We picked out our 15 favorite shots to share, but do click through if you want more, more, more.
