Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week we’ve just one little nugget to rollout: You might have heard that SoftBank is taking Sharp’s flagship smartphone to the U.S., but what you might not know is that Sharp might have the company of a much larger brother.

Welcome to Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!
It’s already Friday west of the international dateline – here in Japan, it’s totally the future. The weekly JTFF is our somewhat Technosnarky coverage of 2-5 particularly important, specifically Japan-related tech stories. Get yourself hip to the micro & macro that went down while North America was sleeping – check in with Akihabara News every Friday morning and BOOM! Ahead of the game, you win.

• SoftBank is Taking Sony to America (Carpooling with Sharp)
Poor Sony mobile. They’ve got a whole lotta good built into their Xperia line of premium smartphones - including waterproofing, typically excellent Sony build quality, and a fantastic camera - but not a whole lotta people around the world are clamoring for their devices (anybody else smell a VAIO-esque situation?). Not even here in Japan - this is iPhone country, yo. To pile it on, at the moment only one carrier in the world’s largest economy, T-Mobile, offers Sony smartphones, and they’re the smallest of America’s big four.

Which is ironic because...>
Enter SoftBank, who, as we reported last week, is spiriting away to America Sharp’s biggest and baddest and sexiest smartphone, the Aquos Crystal, to be hawked by its acquired-last-year subsidiary, Sprint. It now appears likely that Sharp’s near-bezelless device is going to have a travel companion: the soon to be announced Sony Xperia Z3, or perhaps one or more of the Z2 models.
<...SoftBank tried to buy T-Mobile but then gave up because it was a huge pain in the ass or something)

Obviously that T-Mobile deal isn’t doing crap for Sony, so is this new move going to be the foot, or toe, or toenail in the Red, White, and Blue door that Sony needs? We shall see. We shall see. Oh hey - any readers have a Sony Xperia phone? Like it? Let us know down below in the talky-talk space.

Potato chips… meet Colonel Sanders!

Calbee and Kentucky Fried Chicken collaborated to make a new type of potato chips that will be out on January 6.

The flavor is Colonel Crispy, which is based on KFC's "Colonel Crispy" boneless crispy fried chicken.  The chips have stronger garlic and soy sauce taste added on. Sounds like a seriously delicious taste!

It is made for those who wants to have a pet but their apartment/condo rules don't allow them to enjoy a life with a pet. The cat robot snuggles, purrs and meows like an actual cat.

Sega Toys also released a yellow chick robot, Yume Hiyoko, on the same day. It moves like an actual chick by moving its wings and saying peep-peep.
