And We Can Have Them!
Looking in from without, the Japanese sense of humor acquired taste. Like the language and culture, it's often highly contextual and quite literally can't be understood until you know what seems like 200-300 inside jokes.
But, there's one area where Japanese humor really shines for any audience: When Japan goes all meta on itself

It's not a self-deprecating humor, per-se, but even the most revered aspects of Japanese culture can be jabbed and poked at for laughs. Food, particularly that which is unique to Japanese culture, is indeed honored and considered essential and fundamental to the Japanese character - but it's not off limits.

Which is why, if you wanna get yourself some sushi towels, Tokyo Otaku Mode has you covered:

Sushi Roll Towels
TOM’s product description:

“These norimaki and tamagomaki towels are from the design geniuses of GeoDesign in Japan. Exuding style, these handy towel are quite humorously designed after tamagomaki, sushi rolled with tamago (egg), and Norimaki, sushi rolled with nori seaweed. When unrolled, they look like very modern striped towels. However, when folded and rolled up, they look just like norimaki and tamagomaki! The colored stripes combine to look like the filling of these delicious sushi rolls. They look oishii, but they are only towels! They include bands to easily keep them wrapped up or hung. A name tag is also affixed to each. The next time you have sushi with friends, surprise them with these fun and useful products!”

Natto - fermented soy beans - is a favorite among Japanese. We usually eat it with rice for breakfast. It's smelly and slimy so most likely people will want to avoid eating it if they have never tried to before. However, if you are adventurous and get hooked on its mysterious flavor and texture, Natto will be irresistible for you.

Stand-up-eating restaurants are not unusual here.

Many people here are pressed with work every day and don't want to spend too much time to eat, so stand-up restaurants enable these people to eat a satisfying meal for a very short time. Typical examples are stand-up bars, noodle stands, yakitori (skewered grilled chicken) joints, etc. Recently, more fancy types of stand-up restaurants have opened and people started enjoying full-fledged cuisine such as French and Italian food, casually and reasonably.
