Thanko Spy Watch Shoots HD Video & Stills, Stores Data, is Insane

Thanko Spy Watch Shoots HD Video & Stills, Stores Data -

Why Would a Wristwatch Shoot HD Video?
It’s a more than fair question, but asking why Thanko does what it does is practically anathema to their entire business model. Which is not to say that the company doesn’t create some truly innovative and useful products, but, objectively speaking, their lineup also reveals a thoroughly practiced and adhered-to ethos somewhere along the lines of:

“Because we can.”

Cases in point include:

The list goes on. In truth, we’re jealous. Independent tech journalism pales to just like, you know, sitting around all day at Thanko headquarters dreaming up ways to shoehorn an HD camera into something USB-powered. Seriously, that has to be one of the best jobs on planet earth.

The Watch
Now, to the matter at hand (yeaaaahhhh!), the latest addition to Thanko’s Circus of the Unnecessary but Awesome is a real and true wristwatch/HD video and still camera mashup...for doing spy stuff or something (images & video below). And hey guess what, it’s only $80 - hell, that’s an impulse buy right there! ...which, we suspect, is another tenet of the Thanko business model.

The teeny-tiny camera is built-in to the watch’s analog face, just below the 6 o’ clock. Actually, it is rather inconspicuous, and if no one were the wiser, it wouldn’t be readily obvious that a 720p camera was pointed at them - unless of course the wearer was a bit too enthusiastic with dorkily aiming their watch at people/stuff/their own face.

So yeah, with a mode selector, built-in mic with waterproof cap, USB port, video timestamp option, full A/V-out capability, and 4GB of media and/or data storage, Thanko pretty much covered all the bases.

It’s a watch, too.

Don't Call it a Smartwatch!
started selling an Android 4.0 wristwatch smartphone - AR-EC309 - for ¥37,584 (~$380.00).

AR-EC309 is not a smartwatch. It's a SIM-unlocked smartphone. As it's a stand-alone data device, you can make phone calls via Skype or Line as well as accessing the internet and sending messages just like a smartphone - but with no need to pair up with another device via Bluetooth.

ARES Inc., Japanese sports GPS device production company, is going to release watch-style Android device ARES EC309 for 29,800 yen in the beginning of February. It allows you to do data communication and make a phone call via a 3G (WCDMA) connection with a micro SIM.

Unlike a regular watch style device that works well by connecting with a smartphone via Bluetooth, ARES EC309 enables you to connect internet, send emails, download applications bought from Google Play directly.
