We’re really starting to fall in love with this guy’s work. We shared some of his giant robot photography last year, totally dug a Panasonic GH4 time lapse piece from a few months back, and earlier this month, he made our minds go all rubbery with the Inception/Blade Runner lovechild known as Mirrored Tokyo. And today...heeeeee’s back.

Tokyo Bay: Where all the Stuff Comes & Goes 
The title of this particular video is Telecom Center Observatory Tilt Shift, and being that it’s located right in the beating heart of Tokyo Bay, the Tokyo Telecom Center is an excellent place to see ships, trucks, containers - the grandest form of grand-scale commerce in action; tilt-shifted and time lapsed. And although this video’s subject is the frantic, gargantuan business of one of the world’s most active and vital industrial ports, it all looks like toys.

And what is that, exactly? Well, it’s this kind of photography where you tilt/shift a camera’s focal point, and then maybe shoot for a really long time, and then speed it up to lapse the time. Taken from afar, in this case with a Sony Alpha NEX-6 (details, specs, prices), this method makes things look tiny and cute and softens much of the edges and most of the colors.

Yes, that is a total cop-out explanation, but come on now - if you really need to know the fine print, then you’re probably a photographer and that means you probably already know. If you’re not a photographer, but still want to know, then you probably should become a photographer.

Toto has developed a Bedside Flushable Toilet, for use by people who are disabled, elderly or infirm.

With the development of this product, it's possible for flushable toilets to be put exactly where they are needed, independent of the layout of the building. Because the toilet is not fixed in place, it can be moved in line with the needs of the user, reducing the workload of caregivers and giving more independence to people who need care.

Associate Professor Toshiaki Tsuji's Laboratory at Saitama University has developed R-cloud, a rehabilitation support robot that enables users to view how their own muscles move during rehabilitation and training.

Studio Ghibli's new featured animated film - Omoide no Marnie (When Marnie Was There)  - was finally released in 461 movie theaters all over Japan on July 19.

It is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (director of The Secret World of Arrietty), and 2 young Japanese actresses did the main character voices: Sara Takatsuki as Anna (She looks exactly like Anna!), and Kasumi Arimura as Marnie.

At Keio University, the Imai Laboratory, in the Department of Information and Computer Science (Faculty of Science and Technology), is doing three research projects to make communication easier.

LG's New Smartphone Keyboard: Better?

LG announced today a series of smart, adaptive keyboard enhancements that'll roll out with the LG G3 smartphone.

 

This next generation IGZO MEMS display has been developed by a collaboration between Sharp and Qualcomm subsiduary Pixtronics.

Microscopic MEMS shutters which opens and close are used to control the output of light from the red, green, blue and white LEDs which make up each pixel. By using this system, the display features high levels of brightness and color reproduction in any environment, and significantly lowers power consumption.

 

Tensegrity structures are created using isolated struts held together with cables. By utilizing the tensile strength of the cables to place a compressive force on the struts, the structures feature high structural integrity and mechanical stability.

This is an AR support system for constructing objects with a tensegrity structure, created by the Hirasawa Lab at Chiba University.

"We liked this shape a lot. But things like this are difficult to design and build. So, we're using AR to support their construction."
