Some Things are Universal
...like, for example, the marketing value of young ladies in swimsuits standing around holding products. They do catch the eye, and the appeal is universal, but as with any culture, Japan has their particular methodology - here’s how they roll:

Japan has a whole entire genre of photography and fandom (it’s a comprehensive industry, really) dedicated to what are known as Gravure Idols. They’re almost never naked, but they are presented in varying degrees of… intensity. Yeah, maybe that’s the right word. You don’t really need to know what ‘gravure’ means because it’s an obscure newsprint term that got all Japanified and slapped in front of the word ‘idol’ to basically equate the English term Pin-Up Girl.

Doesn’t really make sense, does it?
That sort of thing is rampant - study Japanese for a while and you’ll become well acquainted with the wide world of bastardized loanwords. Shoe Cream, for example, is the term the Japanese have given to cream puffs. Your guess is as good as ours. Oh, and here’s one you actually know: karaoke. That word is half-Japanese and half-English and mispronounced in both languages. Fascinating...

The Point?
Oh yeah, these three girls in swimsuits are promoting a new DVD and/or Blu-Ray set aimed at manly men, we think. And gravure idols do a lot of that kinda promotion here. And we wanted to show you, our dear readers, an example of Japanese culture and stuff...oh, what? Sorry, we kinda lost focus for a moment there.
