Welcome to Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!
It’s already Friday west of the international dateline – here in Japan, it’s totally the future. The weekly JTFF is our somewhat Technosnarky coverage of 2-5 particularly important, specifically Japan-related tech stories. Get yourself hip to the micro & macro that went down while North America was sleeping – check in with Akihabara News every Friday morning and BOOM! Ahead of the game, you win.

• One Japanese Woman and Two American Guys Win Kyoto Prize
Last year when the JTFF reported on the Kyoto Tech Prize, it was all about the American inventor of DRAM getting the $500 grand. This year, it’s two more Americans scientists getting tech prizes, and a Japanese artist is getting the...art prize. The Americans won their loot for 1. finding awesome ways to build artificial scaffolding for human flesh to grow on, and 2. contributing some awesome math to Superstring Theory. Japanese artist Fukumi Shimura, an 89 year-old kimono-making master with executive-level dyeing and weaving skills, received her prize for, you guessed it, making awesome kimonos - which she’s done for 50 years. The Kyoto Prize is one of those things that makes Japan such an interesting animal: wildly monocultural internally, wildly internationalized externally. The JTFF offers props and congratulations to all three parties.

Seriously, we take it for granted, but toilets are the shit! Uh-oh...yeah, might get fired for that one. Maybe not, though! Go read about this toilet party!

This week it’s the JTFF being embarrassed for the BBC publishing some wildly innappropriate and overgeneralized coverage of technology & culture in Japan; specifically the "otaku" phenomenon, and clinging to it as a major reason for Japan’s declining population and all the stay at home singles, because seriously, what else could it be?
