Asagaya is THE Place
Readers might recall an article I wrote awhile ago about the Tohoku Zunko shop located within the Asagaya Anime Street in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward. Naturally, my curiosity was aroused by the various anime-themed shops in the area, and so I decided to take another visit to the street and see what else it might have to offer.

This time, I went into a store called Game Life Asagaya. A member of their staff explained to me that the store’s concept was to be a space for temporary exhibits related to games and anime, sell anime and gaming goods, and even hold events in which they would invite voice actors.

Back to Some Early Roots
Currently, Game Life Asagaya is holding an exhibit centered around Nintendo’s Family Computer, or Famicom, that was released in Japan on July 15, 1983 and in North America two years later.

Several hundred genuine Famicom games are on display, and there is even an actual Famicom system that visitors can use to play titles such as the original Super Mario Bros.

I don’t consider myself a retro gamer, but I was eager to give the Famicom a try so I could experience a game that was made before I was even born. As you can see in the video below, I probably need a little more practice with Super Mario Bros., but I could definitely tell how it became such a hit worldwide.

Bring up all your old gaming memories with the full-size images below. How many of these did you have?

The Famicom exhibit at Game Life Asagaya only runs until June 18th, so if you’re a retro gamer and happen to be in Tokyo over the next few days, this is definitely a must-see.

Smartphones and the “freemium” business models are bringing a dual paradigm shift to games and create a new truly global market. To take advantage of this global paradigm shift, its necessary to overcome the cultural disconnects between markets. SoftBank and GungHo‘s investment in the Finnish smartphone/tablet game maker Supercell, announced on Oct. 15, will help to overcome the disconnect between Japan’s and other game markets for both Supercell and GungHo.
