REVIEW: Lightning Rabbit Premium Gadget Cables (GALLERY)

REVIEW: Lightning Rabbit Premium Gadget Cables (GALLERY)

Lightning Rabbits are cables. Some very nice cables. We reviewed them...err, commented on them. A 2000-word TL:DR expose on a gadget cable is a level of geekery to which we cannot rise, so comments suffice.

And so, read on for our impressions of this nice little accessory developed by LAT28 DESIGN:

What we Have Here Are:
• Five-foot fabric-wound gadget cables that;
• connect USB power and data via;

Apple Lightning; Apple 30-pin; or Micro USB;
• and have nice aluminum terminal covers and;
• come in three lovely colors.

We tested on an iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4S, an Android phone, 3-4 different cameras, and some other random gadgetry. Our test cables were the ‘Classy Silver’ colorway (orange and purple cables are also available).

Data transfer was never a problem, so herein we're really we're talking form, use, and value. So, to get the ball rolling...

Let’s Ask Senior Contributor Nayalan Moodley:

Editor:
Are these Lightning Rabbit gadget cables special?

Nayalan, AKA DarcNoodles:
It’s a cable. It transfers electricity at the speed of electricity and data at the speed of USB. And the build quality is excellent.

Ed:
How about the fabric covering?

NM-DN:
The braided cable allows more flex than regular cables and therefore handles being scrunched up in a bag and being wound and unwound repeatedly.

Ed:
Sturdy?

NM-DN:
The terminals seem hard and the points where they connect to the cable appear to be strong. It also survived my unscientific 3-story drop test.

Ed:
How about plugging them into things?

NM-DN:
I had no problems, even with the slightly more recessed USB port on my HTC J Butterfly (Droid DNA). Also, didn’t have any troubles with the case like my the Amazon Basics cable does.

Ed:
For probably very few, but certainly some Micro USB devices and iPhone 5S and iPad cases and bumpers, the Lightning Rabbit terminal is just a bit too large to get up in there, so measure before buying: the dimensions of the Micro USB and Apple Lightning terminal are 12mm x 7mm (see full-size image below).

Ed:
Handsome, too - easy on the eyes, yeah?

NM-DN:
I suppose you could say it’s a good looking cable. I don’t really look at cables though. But it certainly looks better than the generic plastic things you get on the backstreets of Akihabara.

We Do Recommend
Okay, so Mr. Nayalan McOnlyThinksAesteticsMatterInHisPrettyPhotography might not be wholly moved by their appearance, but trust us - they're good looking.
For those who’ve worn through cable after cable, whether they be mobile reporters or otherwise pounding keyboard, or anyone who works away from outlets and needs to frequently charge mobile devices, the Lightning Rabbit cables are an excellent choice for durability, general usability, and overall attractiveness.

On top of the performance and pretty, at $20 each they’re also a really decent value. Apple’s standard offering is $19; Lightning Rabbit's braided cable, brushed aluminum ends, and three color options make that extra 100 pennies/yen far beyond worth it. Even at the mundane level of device cables, it’s nice to have nice stuff, and these are just that.
