Koichi Wakata in Space! (MESSAGE FROM THE CUPOLA)

Updates from Low Earth Orbit
JAXA Astronaut Koichi Wakata (Wiki here), the recently returned to Earth, former Commander of the International Space Station's Expedition 39 is an excellent space resource. From 250 miles (400km) above the earth in his ISS residence, he broadcasted entertaining and informative Tweets and photos, and, in cooperation with other ISS crew members and JAXA staff here on the ground, produced weekly, bi-lingual YouTube updates.

JAXA's ISS YouTube Update Vol. 27:
Space life is busy and all, and naturally video production and delivery times can vary, and there's sometimes a bit of a backlog and/or time delay with Commander Wakata's videos. Although now returned to Earth and replaced by NASA's Steven Swanson, Commander Wakata's 27th weekly video update has just been released. That's no criticism from us, when you're trying to do science and command a space station and stuff, taking the time to make nearly 30 videos for public consumption is awesome, and appreciated.

In Vol. 27, Commander Wakata speaks from the ISS's cupola, named so due to its resemblance to the architectural standard. The Cupola has also been rightly compared to the cockpit of Star Wars' Millenium Falcon, the reasons why should be obvious.

Speaking in subtitled Japanese, Commander Wakata speaks passionately about orbiting the earth every 90 minutes. He describes the thoughts one has when passing from day to night at 17,000 MPH (27,000 KPH), and how he in particular experiences the these views of the earth.

While he of course speaks politely and in a professional cadence, this shot of Commander Wakata is somehow more humanizing than most of the previous updates. We think you'll enjoy it.
