Big Lineup & Big Stars
On May 14, 2014, AkihabaraNews witnessed NTT docomo's 2014 summer rollout at Belle Salle Shiodome in Tokyo.

Kaoru Kato, Chief Executive Officer and President of NTT docomo, showed up on stage at 12:PM, and started his presentation with the statement:

“NTT docomo aims to be a "Smart Life Partner" by satisfying consumers with their price plan, devices, service and network.”

First of all, the lineup of NTT docomo's new products was honestly nothing very surprising (we will introduce them later), and also, the rollout itself was a classic, normal event without any huge breakout news. Regarding their main rivals, SoftBank announced that they will not hold a new product rollout for a while, and au by KDDI stressed their new au WALLET service above all their network and new devices talk.

VoLTE
However, it was interesting to hear that NTT docomo will start providing a service called "VoLTE" (Voice-over-LTE) - a first in Japan - in late June. It was obviously the biggest attraction of the event. VoLTE is a voice call functionality using an LTE network to provide high-quality, stable sound and ultra-fast sending and receiving of phone calls (3 seconds for phone calls to go through, compared with the current standard of 6 to 8 seconds), and high-quality video call. Phone calls via 3G network normally cover 300Hz-3.4kHz voice frequency, but the LTE network can cover 50Hz-7kHz.

To use VoLTE service, unfortunately both people have to have VoLTE compliant devices. Six of NTT docomo’s 12 new products support VoLTE, so it will be a gradual change for most users as they eventually upgrade. After covering the big new network feature, Mr. Kato introduced all the new products quickly and without emphasis on any one of them.
