On May 14, 2014, AkihabaraNews witnessed NTT docomo's 2014 summer rollout at Belle Salle Shiodome in Tokyo.

Kaoru Kato, Chief Executive Officer and President of NTT docomo, showed up on stage at 12:PM, and started his presentation with the statement:

“NTT docomo aims to be a "Smart Life Partner" by satisfying consumers with their price plan, devices, service and network.”

First of all, the lineup of NTT docomo's new products was honestly nothing very surprising (we will introduce them later), and also, the rollout itself was a classic, normal event without any huge breakout news. Regarding their main rivals, SoftBank announced that they will not hold a new product rollout for a while, and au by KDDI stressed their new au WALLET service above all their network and new devices talk.

VoLTE
However, it was interesting to hear that NTT docomo will start providing a service called "VoLTE" (Voice-over-LTE) - a first in Japan - in late June. It was obviously the biggest attraction of the event. VoLTE is a voice call functionality using an LTE network to provide high-quality, stable sound and ultra-fast sending and receiving of phone calls (3 seconds for phone calls to go through, compared with the current standard of 6 to 8 seconds), and high-quality video call. Phone calls via 3G network normally cover 300Hz-3.4kHz voice frequency, but the LTE network can cover 50Hz-7kHz.

To use VoLTE service, unfortunately both people have to have VoLTE compliant devices. Six of NTT docomo’s 12 new products support VoLTE, so it will be a gradual change for most users as they eventually upgrade. After covering the big new network feature, Mr. Kato introduced all the new products quickly and without emphasis on any one of them.

started selling an Android 4.0 wristwatch smartphone - AR-EC309 - for ¥37,584 (~$380.00).

au by KDDI announced that the blue color model of isai LGL22, which is a co-developed smartphone with LG and au by KDDI, will be finally released on December 5.

Other colors were already released: aqua and white models was out on November 23 and black model was out on November 28.

After acquiring an ownership stake in American telecommunication company, Sprint, in July 2013, SoftBank finally started getting more serious about developing a partnership with Sprint.

SoftBank recently announced that they have developed a smartphone platform jointly with Sprint to reduce procurement costs and bring the device's price down. They are also now able to make their own unique devices and these co-developed devices will be sold in Japan and the U.S.

Sony unveiled another new smartphone - Xperia M2 - at MWC 2014 (Mobile World Congress 2014), in Barcelona, Spain.

Sony announced that it is planning to sell Xperia M2 for less than €220 (About ¥30,000, $300) although they haven't revealed which carriers in which countries will release it. It has a 4.8-inch display and a camera with 8.1MP CMOS sensor Exmor RS for mobile, and it is compatible with LTE network and NFC function.

It seems like Sony is going to unveil their new Xperia Z2 (Sirius) at MWC 2014 (Mobile World Congress) which will start on February 24 in Barcelona, Spain. However just before the kick-off of the show, a Youtube video showing a device that looks like the new Xperia Z2 has been revealed.

According to the video, the device looks like it has Android 4.4 KitKat, 4K movie function, and a plugin called "Time Shift Video".

Takara Tomy announced the release of a toy smartphone for kids - My Touch Smart "Line Friends".  With it, kids can pretend like sending and receiving messages and stamps on the popular communication application LINE.  It will be out for sale on August 7.

As if it is a real smartphone, it has a LED display, camera function, music reply ability, and more than 30 kinds of playable applications.

Huawei Japan, Chinese telecommunications equipment and services company, announced they will start selling their SIM-free devices after late June in Japan.

The first product will be the Android 4.3 smartphone "Ascend G6" and will be sold through multiple electronics retail stores such as Bic Camera, Edion, and Nojima. Ascend G6 was unveiled in the Mobile World Congress 2014 that took place last February.

Sony's new Android 4.4 smartphone - Xperia ZL2 - will be released by au by KDDI as Xperia ZL2 SOL25 at the end of this month in Japan.

au has announced the release of their new 2014 winter "isai" smartphone model - isai VL LGV31 - manufactured by LG.  It will be out for sale in early December.

Specs of isai VL LGV31 are based on the 2014 summer model isai FL LGL24, but the new model has improved main memory up to 3GB.
