This week Nigeria learns why Japan is unable to offer military support in the search for several hundred missing young women, but can offer certain technological expertise, and in less somber news, Subaru is enjoying fantastic success in North America.

Welcome to Japanese Technology from the Future Friday Saturday!
It’s already Friday Saturday west of the international dateline – here in Japan, it’s totally the future. The weekly JTFF is our somewhat Technosnarky coverage of 2-5 particularly important, specifically Japan-related tech stories. Get yourself hip to the micro & macro that went down while North America was sleeping – check in with Akihabara News (usually) every Friday (not Saturday) morning and BOOM! Ahead of the game, you win.

• Nigeria Learns Why Japan Can’t Send Troops
It’s pretty safe to say that a majority of Americans and basically all Japanese know why Japan isn’t able to offer troops or military equipment in the international push to help Nigeria rescue more than 200 young girls and women abducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Now, contrary to the usual technosnarky tone of the JTFF, we have absolutely zero irreverence on this issue, and we strongly support both the efforts to safely return these women to their families and actions directed at eradicating their primitive, barbarian captors. What brings this issue to us is that, given their less congruent history, it’s logical to assume that African nations are naturally less aware of the tenets laid out by what is commonly known as the ‘Peace Constitution,’ Japan’s post WWII denouncement of war that includes strict prohibitions on the development of offensive military capability or overseas deployment of its self-defense forces (with the very occasional exception for development and humanitarian efforts). It’s interesting to read this brief piece from a Nigerian publication, wherein the details are very plainly laid out as if being presented to readers for the first time - and for many Nigerians, it quite likely is. There is one thing Japan can provide, however, and that’s technology and supply line support, and that’s a very good thing.

• Subaru is Going Gangbusters in North America
Turning now to something less somber, we’re seeing that not only is Subaru doing some amazing things with the BRZ GT300 Race Queens (ha!), they’re also selling boatloads of cars to Canadians, Americans, and Mexicans...we think so on the Mexicans, anyway - it's not explicitly stated, but Mexico is in North America. Just sayin. Oh, and it’s not actual boatloads, because thousands upon thousands of Subarus are indeed manufactured in North America, is the thing. Sales have been so good in North America that the Fuji Heavy Industries subsidiary is planning for a 20% increase in sales by 2020, and what’s awesome for them is that it totally looks feasible, if not likely.

That was the JTFFS, and live from the future – that is all.
