Streets of Osaka by Jordan Yerman (GALLERY)

Streets of Osaka - AkihabaraNews.com

Falling for Osaka...
Lovers embrace high atop the Umeda Sky Building as stray kittens hustle for food in Minami-Temma Park.

If Tokyo is a too-cool-for-school designer with the effortlessly stylish outfit, Osaka is wearing dad jeans while fixing your stereo. Japan’s third-largest city becomes its second-largest during the workday, and its nighttime streets reward those who give them more than a casual glance.

During the Edo Period, Osaka was called “the nation’s kitchen.” Today, it’s home to some surprisingly wonderful Mexican food. It even has a miniature version of Akihabara, for those who really do need their stereos fixed.

Take a peek at Osaka and soak up some blue-collar soul.

Very Big Game Show
If you haven't been to Makuhari Messe before, know that 'convention center' doesn't quite do it justice. No, 'stadium' is a closer approximation of the venue's size and footprint on the northeastern edge of Tokyo Bay [MAP], part of the Tokyo Metro Area, but actually in Chiba Prefecture (not far from from Tokyo Disney Land).

May the Fourth Be With You (Japan Style) - AkihabaraNews.com

It’s Just Different Over Here
As with almost every spot of Western culture that Japan Hoovers up, in accordance with the nuance of local tastes, i.e., straight-up Borg-like assimilative capabilities, the institution of Star Wars has been exhaustively Japanified. The same popular characters are popular, but often they’re just doing other stuff...

Mainstream Japanese society is boring. One could argue that mainstream society globally is never exciting, but the homogenous nature and stubborn adherence to routines and social hierarchies make this island nation particularly dull.

It can't be all tech all the time, so each week AkihabaraNews editors set out to collect 10 high-res shots of average, public Tokyo life. Some of the Street Shots scream and grab the eye, some are subtle and nuanced, and some are quite mundane. In any case, we feel lucky to be here and privileged to share the Tokyo that we see.
