Honda Debuts XS1 Concept: It's Compact, Sporty, Utilitarian; Not Quite an SUV (GALLERY)

Honda XS1 Concept - AkihabaraNews.com

Japanese automakers are making a strong showing in the compact car segment of the 12th Auto Expo 2014, currently underway in New DehliIndia's premier auto show is actualy Asia's largest, and the second largest in the world, and it was there that Honda released their vision of the compact segment’s future. Designed around their new “M/M” philosophy (Maximum Man, Minimum Machine), the XS1 is a ‘not for production’ base model intended to set design cues for the Japanese maker’s future compact cars.

It appears Honda wants the XS1 to be everything to everybody: it sports a...sporty exterior design, driver centric control layout, large sliding doors for easy access, and space for 7 people in 3 rows of seats that also fold away to expand luggage capacity… all in a compact body. There’s no information on powertrain, but judging by Honda’s recent lineup and other recent concepts, It would probably be quite eco friendly.

It is an innovative concept that is likely to turn heads and garner a fair amount of attention. It remains to be seen what, if anything, makes it from the XS1 into production vehicles in the next few years, but if it somehow does find its way to the road, it might be that perfect ‘kitchen sink’ automobile.

Take a look through the gallery, check out Honda's promo video, and let us know if an XS1-like vehicle is something you could see in your future, and if so, what features would you want?

TMS 2013: Wonderful, Amazing, and Almost Entirely In-the-Box
A bit of a surprise, we felt; not a whole lotta design risks being taken at this year's show. The dominant themes were connectivity amongst a range of eco/green vehicles, and correspondingly, most of the cars seemed a version of a semi-morphed, slightly squeezed or widened Prius; or too close to a racecar to be practical; or very small with questionable utility.

Hokkaido University and RIKEN AICS are researching aerodynamics simulation, to simulate the air flow around automobiles.
Investigating the force exerted by air on a moving car is essential for improving fuel efficiency and safety. In particular, using a supercomputer called K has made it possible to simulate air resistance, which is the most important factor, with a precision equivalent to wind tunnel tests.
