Traveling home from the Tokyo Skytree, an AkihabaraNews editor found himself with the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the front window of the lead car. Most days we only see the a lateral view, i.e., the world going by as a real-life scenery roll. Every once again, you get a nice clear shot from the very first or very last car - and if you're lucky, you might be holding an HD camera.

The Tokyo Metro and Toei networks together carry a combined average of over eight million passengers daily. Despite being ranked first in worldwide subway usage, subways make up a small fraction of heavy rail rapid transit in Tokyo alone - only 274 out of 882 railway stations, as of 2007. The Tokyo subway at 8.7 million daily passengers only represents 22% of Tokyo's 40 million daily rail passengers.

During the summer in Japan, we can sometimes expect a torrential downpour in late afternoon. It's really scary because all of a sudden the color of the sky turns yellow and deafening rumbles of thunder start.   

Today we had a sudden temporary heavy downpour as usual and that reminded us of this currently popular youtube video. Probably many of you have already seen it as it was uploaded about 10 days ago. Massive lightning hit a moving Odakyu train in Tokyo. A part of the train was burnt, but fortunately no one on the train was hurt.

Fujitsu boosts security for multi-service palm-vein authentication system

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new identification technology, which enables palm-vein identification to be used securely in a wider range of situations.

Conventional palm-vein identification works by comparing complex vein patterns extracted from images of the user's palm. By contrast, Fujitsu's new technology extracts characteristic components from the vein patterns, and uses them to generate 2,048-bit reference codes which are used for comparison.
