Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!

JTFF - Japanese Technology from the Future Friday! - AkihabaraNews.com

This week Japan’s running into some sticky situations with its Turkish nuclear tech dealings (saw that coming), Japan's Sony was pretty awesome at CES, but another nation’s tech overshadowed all that, and Nintendo, despite selling a whole lotta gear in 2013, is still in some hot, red water.

Welcome to Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!
It’s already Friday west of the international dateline – here in Japan, it’s totally the future. The weekly JTFF is our somewhat Technosnarky coverage of 2-5 particularly important, specifically Japan-related tech stories. Get yourself hip to the micro & macro that went down while North America was sleeping – check in with Akihabara News every Friday morning and BOOM! Ahead of the game, you win.

:: JTFF – January 17, 2014 ::

• Japan’s Nuclear Tech in Turkey, or: if You Can’t Sell it at Home...
This topic is familiar... hmmm… AH-HA! Okay, actually, before AkihabaraNews had full custody of the JTFF, Anthrobotic.com (the JTFF’s progenitor) had already brought this issue up last May. See, in the first quarter of 2013, Japan was all kindsa shopping its nuclear tech around the middle east - because the Middle East has a boatload of two things: money, and fossil fuels. Japan has a boatload of money, but not so much with the fossil fuels, which, anyone with a few warm brain cells knows, are in much greater demand since the hippies kept Japan’s nuclear power shut down after the Tohoku/Fukushima Disaster - said nuclear power accounted for about 30% of Japan’s domestic energy production - and it was shut down because, well, seems hippies like fossil fuel imports more than domestic nuclear power - because they’re hard of thinking. Hyphen-enabled, hippy deriding run-on sentences aside, the issue has come back up. See, that nuclear tech Japan wants to sell to the economically booming Turks (because they can't really use it here anymore) allows for the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, which can be weaponized to allow for a lot of human death. You know, it’s just… pretty hard not to blame the hippies on this one.

• CES 2014: 25 Years Later, Korea is the New Japan. Ouch.
Sony really threw down at CES, and we all took notice. Lots of cool. Lots of bold. And, lots of speculation that the lumbering, increasingly irrelevant tech giant might have finally taken a look in the mirror, decided to change its ways, because no message could have been any clearer (comment - you’ll win a cookie). Nevertheless, this dude over at Forbes says that Korea is the new Japan. And he’s been going to CES since 1989. Hmmm. Thoughts?

• Nintendo is not Selling Enough Nintendos
This one really has to sting. On one hand, Nintendo sold 11.5 million 3DS units in 2013 - that makes it the #1-selling game system the known universe. Awesome, yeah? Well, turns out they expected to sell a helluva lot more of them. And a lot more Wii Us as well. So, on the other hand, they’re slashing projected earnings and expect to take yet another massive loss this year. Less than last, but still, another year in the big red. And the 25-billion yen elephant in the corner: maybe they should make a smartphone?
