2 Japanese animation films nominated for an Academy Award

The nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards were announced yesterday (US time), and we were happy to hear that 2 Japanese animation movies were nominated!

First, of course, from Studio Ghibli…

- The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli for Animated Feature Film

Hayao Miyazaki won the Oscar for Animated Feature Film in 2003 with Sprited Away and was nominated again for Howl's Moving Castle in 2006. The Wind Rises was released shortly before Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement and that this would be his last feature film.

- Possessions by Shuhei Morita, Yamatoworks for Short Film (Animated)

This is the first Oscar nomination for Shuhei Morita, Japanese animation director. Possession (Japanese title: Tsukumo) is a part of the omnibus film SHORT PEACE which consists of 3 other directors' short films including that of the famous director, Katsuhiro Otomo.

Hopefully, we will see a speech from both directors at this year's Oscars!
