"Washoku" (Japanese food) is going to be registered as a World Heritage cuisine!
The Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan announced that "Washoku" (literally, "Japanese food"), the pride of the nation, was deemed appropriate to be registered as an intangible cultural heritage by a subsidiary organ of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
An intangible cultural heritage is something that is part of the cultural assets of a community such as entertainment, social customs, ceremonies and festivals. In Japan, Nogaku Theatre, Gion festival's Yamahoko Junko, and Yuki-tsumugi (Japanese silk craft) are all already registered as an intangible cultural heritage, but nothing related to food has yet been registered.
People believe that Japanese food is healthy and nutritious, and this fact has helped this style of cuisine to gain in popularity. Delicious dishes cooked with fresh ingredients, especially rich seasonal foods, served artistically, keep attracting people all over the world. Also, Japanese food is rich in diversity. Each region has different kinds of specialities because they are affected by climate and topography. The Japanese have the advantage of natural, geographical and seasonal influences.
Not limited to gourmet food like sushi or kaiseki meals, we have lots of cheaper and enjoyable food options as well. Ramen and "Izakaya" restaurants started spreading in popularity overseas, so we hope other kinds of our favorites will be followed by them.
So far in the world, there are 4 cuisines that have been certified: French cuisine, Mediterranean diet, Traditional Mexican cuisine, and Ceremonial Keskek tradition.
