Japan Airlines places first-time orders for Airbus - the new A350 XWB

Japan Airlines (JAL) just announced that they have signed a purchase contract of the new jet airplane A350 XWB (XWB = eXtra Wide Body), manufactured by Airbus, and they are planning to start operating the A350 XWB in 2019.

It is the first time for JAL to place an order for Airbus airplanes, and also it is the first time for Airbus to accept an order of A350 XWB from any Japanese airlines.

A350 XWB is designed to become a competitor of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and also uses carbon-fiber composites, however, A350 XWB is not dependent on a lithium battery, which caused Boeing 787 to have a lot of incidences. The A350 XWB series consist of 3 models: A350-800 (270 seats), A350-900 (314 seats) and A350-1000 (350 seats). JAL confirmed that they ordered 18 of the A350-900 and 13 of the A350-1000 so far.
