Christmas cake with Miki from The Idolmaster in a Santa costume

Some fun facts about Christmas here in Japan:

1) Christmas is not a family or religious event. It's a romantic date day for couples - almost like another Valentine's day.

2) Christmas songs already started playing in Japan - I already had to listen to them in the cafe in my neighborhood recently. It was still in SEPTEMBER!  By November 1st, it is in all cafes, supermarkets, department stores, streets, etc.

3) We order whole cakes decorated for Christmas. It's probably the best selling day for cake shops throughout the year.

Anyway, regarding a Christmas cake, how about one with a girl's figure on it for this year? The girl is Miki Hoshii from the video game "The Idolmaster" and she is in a Santa Clause costume!

The cake itself looks good too with champagne flavored whipped cream, diced peach and muscat flavored coating on top.

You can place the order in advance on Bandai's online website. It's 3,990 yen. They will ship the cake within Japan in December.

Sakura-Miku-Man is back! Now available at Family Mart.

Last March, Family Mart released the cutest An-man (a steamed bun with a redbean jam filling) in collaboration with Hatsune Miku.

Because Sakura (cherry blossom) season is just around the corner, this An-man's Hatsune Miku has pink colored hair, not the usual turquoise hair. Therefore, it's called Sakura-Miku-Man. Her famous pigtails are recreated on Sakura-Miku-Man.

Global noodle behemoth Nissin, a company very well known for it’s playful, often bizarre TV ad campaigns, has once again unleashed a winner: two hungry samurai come across some ducks; one of the ducks ain’t exactly a duck; goofy hijinks ensue.

When did Japanese people start to like to eat something sweet and salty at the same time?

I believed that a mixed flavor with something sweet and salty was not Japanese people's cup of tea, for example, Hawaiian pizza, fruit in mayonnaise flavored salad, and maple syrup on a sausage. Yet, it seems like the Japanese sense of taste is changing. The sweet-salty-mixed flavor is getting more acceptable.
