Christmas cake with Miki from The Idolmaster in a Santa costume

Some fun facts about Christmas here in Japan:

1) Christmas is not a family or religious event. It's a romantic date day for couples - almost like another Valentine's day.

2) Christmas songs already started playing in Japan - I already had to listen to them in the cafe in my neighborhood recently. It was still in SEPTEMBER!  By November 1st, it is in all cafes, supermarkets, department stores, streets, etc.

3) We order whole cakes decorated for Christmas. It's probably the best selling day for cake shops throughout the year.

Anyway, regarding a Christmas cake, how about one with a girl's figure on it for this year? The girl is Miki Hoshii from the video game "The Idolmaster" and she is in a Santa Clause costume!

The cake itself looks good too with champagne flavored whipped cream, diced peach and muscat flavored coating on top.

You can place the order in advance on Bandai's online website. It's 3,990 yen. They will ship the cake within Japan in December.

Takara Tomy Arts is going to release a Natto mixing machine Rosanjin Natto Bachi on February 6.

Natto - fermented soy beans - is a favorite among Japanese. We usually eat it with rice for breakfast. It's smelly and slimy so most likely people will want to avoid eating it if they have never tried to before. However, if you are adventurous and get hooked on its mysterious flavor and texture, Natto will be irresistible for you.

Stand-up-eating restaurants are not unusual here.

Many people here are pressed with work every day and don't want to spend too much time to eat, so stand-up restaurants enable these people to eat a satisfying meal for a very short time. Typical examples are stand-up bars, noodle stands, yakitori (skewered grilled chicken) joints, etc. Recently, more fancy types of stand-up restaurants have opened and people started enjoying full-fledged cuisine such as French and Italian food, casually and reasonably.

A Japanese candy company, UHA Mikakuto, has released salt-grilled salmon flavored gummy candy. There are salmon flakes in the center of the candy - UHA Mikakuto pursue real salmon flavor fearlessly. It's probably a super fishy candy so you might want to eat it with rice. Indeed, welcome to Japan.
