Nikon has announced the release of the ultra-compact COOLPIX S02, the successor to its ultra-compact S01 model, and featuring a number of notable improvements.
It features an effective pixel count of 13.2 million pixels (up from 10.1 million pixels in the S01) and features a CMOS sensor (an improvement over the CCD sensor in the S01) as well as a high-performance NIKKOR lens.
It also boasts a relatively roomy 2.7 inch 230k-dot TFT LCD monitor which is larger than the 2.5 inch on the S01. This makes sizing up and viewing pictures easier despite its ultra-compact body (77.1mm wide x 51.3mm high x 17.3 mm deep) which is smaller than the average business card and fits in the palm of your hand.
All functionality is operated using an intuitive touch screen with a number of operational improvements over the S01. The touch screen gives the camera a minimal look and feel, allowing it to be very smooth and streamlined from all sides.
Its Nikkor lens allows 3x optical zoom and a wide-angle 30mm to 90mm (equivalents in 35-mm format). It also features a high-output xenon flash and has many auto scenes and filter effects. It records 1920 x 1080p, p, 30-fps full-HD movies with stereo sound.
It will be available in silver, pink and white (and in the international market, will also be available in blue).
Release date is September 19th. Price has not been set yet.
