Massive lightning strikes moving train in Tokyo

During the summer in Japan, we can sometimes expect a torrential downpour in late afternoon. It's really scary because all of a sudden the color of the sky turns yellow and deafening rumbles of thunder start.

Today we had a sudden temporary heavy downpour as usual and that reminded us of this currently popular youtube video. Probably many of you have already seen it as it was uploaded about 10 days ago. Massive lightning hit a moving Odakyu train in Tokyo. A part of the train was burnt, but fortunately no one on the train was hurt.

Don't miss the last 30 seconds.

In July 2013, Meditrek in Yokohama released the Meruru, which enables soft contact lenses to be inserted and removed without touching the fingers.

"Using soft contact lenses requires practice, and even after practicing, quite a lot of people find it difficult to insert and remove soft contact lenses. If there was a way to handle contact lenses easily, without hurting the eyes, it would be a great help to such people."

2x3D, developed by the Shirai Lab at Kanagawa Institute of Technology, is a system that lets the same screen be viewed simultaneously by people who want to watch it in 2D and 3D.

Whereas conventional passive 3D systems use polarizing filters for both the left and right eyes, this system uses a special picture-generating algorithm. Pictures for the left eye can be seen with the naked eye and only pictures for the right eye need to be viewed through a polarizing filter.

Sega Toys recently released a white cat robot, Yume Neko Celeb, for 11,000 yen.

It is made for those who wants to have a pet but their apartment/condo rules don't allow them to enjoy a life with a pet. The cat robot snuggles, purrs and meows like an actual cat.

Sega Toys also released a yellow chick robot, Yume Hiyoko, on the same day. It moves like an actual chick by moving its wings and saying peep-peep.

Hokkaido University and RIKEN AICS are researching aerodynamics simulation, to simulate the air flow around automobiles.
Investigating the force exerted by air on a moving car is essential for improving fuel efficiency and safety. In particular, using a supercomputer called K has made it possible to simulate air resistance, which is the most important factor, with a precision equivalent to wind tunnel tests.

It keeps the computer busy.
